Deck replacement

Many coastal decks were built with ordinary softwood and plated screws, and the sea air has found them out. We replace them with materials that last.

Summary

We replace worn coastal decks rather than patching them. If the frame is sound, we re-board it in composite or hardwood with stainless fixings. If posts and joists are soft or brackets have rusted through, we strip it out and rebuild. We lift boards to check at the free visit.

What the coast does to an old deck

The usual story: softwood boards gone grey and split, screws rusted with orange streaks down the boards, joist hangers corroded, and a frame that stays damp because air can't get underneath. Near the dunes, sand fills the gaps and holds moisture. In time, boards soften and the deck starts to feel unsafe.

Re-board or rebuild

If the joists and posts are still sound, we can fit new boards on the existing frame, adding joists if needed and replacing any rusty fixings. Often, though, a coastal frame built with plated hangers and screws has corroded where you can't see it, and a full rebuild is the honest answer.

Building it better the second time

A replacement is a chance to use materials that suit the coast: capped composite or dense hardwood, stainless fixings and coastal-rated brackets throughout, and a ventilated, well-drained frame. We'll also look at whether shelter from the wind would make the deck more usable.

Clear-out included

We remove the old deck and frame, clear sand and debris, take it all away and prepare the ground properly before building.

FAQs

Why did our old deck rot so quickly?

Usually a mix of softwood, poor ventilation, sand holding damp and fixings that rusted. Near the sea these problems speed up.

Do you replace rusted screws and brackets?

Yes. Any fixings we reuse a frame with are replaced with stainless, and rusted hangers or brackets are swapped for coastal-rated ones.
